What is Keyless Entry?

Updated 2026-05-28

Keyless entry) is a method of accessing a property using an electronic locking mechanism. Instead of a metal key, guests use a pre-assigned digital credential, which can be a PIN entered on a keypad, a signal from a smartphone, or a smart card.

This technology is central to enabling self-check-in and enhancing property security for vacation rentals. The locks themselves are often referred to as smart locks or digital locks.

How it works

A host installs an electronic lock that is either connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or operates offline with pre-programmed codes. The host then generates a unique access code or digital key for each guest's specific reservation period. Property management software, such as Lodgify, can automate the creation and delivery of these unique codes via email or automated messages.

The code becomes active at check-in time and automatically expires upon checkout, removing the need for a physical key exchange and ensuring a secure turnover.

Why it matters

Keyless entry significantly improves operational efficiency and guest experience. It facilitates contactless self-check-in, which is highly valued by modern travelers for its convenience and flexibility.

For hosts, it enhances security by eliminating the risks associated with lost, stolen, or copied keys, as each code is unique to the guest and their stay. This automation reduces the manual workload of coordinating key handoffs, especially for property managers with multiple listings.

Examples

  • A host who lives in a different city from their beach condo uses a keyless entry system to grant guests access remotely. They schedule a new code for each booking, which is automatically emailed to the guest 24 hours before arrival.
  • A guest's flight is delayed, causing them to arrive at their rental after midnight. With keyless entry, they can let themselves in using the code they received without having to wake the host.
  • A property manager provides their cleaning crew with a recurring access code that only works on Tuesdays between 11 AM and 3 PM, ensuring property access is limited to authorized personnel during designated times.
  • For a luxury villa, the host provides guests with a digital key via a dedicated guest app. Guests can use their smartphone's Bluetooth to unlock the door upon approach for a seamless entry experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is keyless entry secure for vacation rentals?+
Yes, keyless entry is generally more secure than traditional keys. Since each guest receives a unique code that expires after their stay, it prevents previous guests from re-entering the property. It also eliminates the risk of physical keys being duplicated or lost.
What happens if the power or internet goes out?+
Most smart locks are battery-powered, so a power outage does not affect their ability to lock or unlock. While an internet outage may prevent a host from changing a code remotely, any codes already programmed into the lock will continue to function correctly. Many models also include a backup physical keyway for emergencies.
How are access codes delivered to guests?+
Hosts can send codes manually via email or text message. More commonly, property management software is used to automate the process, sending the code in a pre-arrival email, through an SMS, or via a dedicated guest app.
Can I grant temporary access to a handyman or cleaner?+
Yes, a major advantage of keyless entry systems is the ability to create multiple user codes. You can issue a temporary code for a one-time maintenance visit or a recurring code for your weekly cleaning staff that only works during their scheduled hours.
