What is Acceptance Rate?

Updated 2026-06-12

Acceptance Rate is a key performance indicator for vacation rental hosts, particularly on platforms that offer a "request to book" option. It is calculated by dividing the number of booking requests a host accepts by the total number of requests received within a specific timeframe (e.g., the last 365 days).

This metric does not apply to listings that use an "Instant Book" feature, as those bookings are confirmed automatically. A high acceptance rate signals to the platform and potential guests that the host is active, responsive, and likely to approve bookings.

How it works

Online travel agencies like Airbnb and Vrbo automatically track a host's Acceptance Rate for any listings not on Instant Book. The calculation is simple: (Number of Accepted Requests / Total Number of Booking Requests) x 100 = Acceptance Rate.

A "booking request" is a formal request from a guest to book specific dates, which the host must manually approve or decline within a set window, typically 24 hours. Letting a request expire without a response counts the same as a decline.

This metric is usually displayed to hosts in their performance dashboard.

Why it matters

A host's Acceptance Rate impacts their listing's visibility and success on OTA platforms. A low rate can lead to a lower search ranking, as algorithms may favor hosts who are more likely to accept bookings.

While it's no longer a specific requirement for achieving Airbnb's Superhost status (which now emphasizes a low host cancellation rate), it remains a key metric for other programs. For example, Vrbo's Premier Host program requires a high acceptance rate.

A strong rate signals reliability to both the platform and potential guests.

Examples

  • A host receives 25 booking requests for their beach house in July. They accept 23 but decline 2 because the prospective guests' stated plans violated the 'no-party' house rule. The host's acceptance rate is 92%.
  • A property owner forgets to block out dates for a family vacation and receives four booking requests for that period. They are forced to decline all four, causing their acceptance rate to drop significantly and lowering their listing's position in search results.
  • To qualify for the Vrbo Premier Host program, a manager needs to maintain an acceptance rate of 90% or higher. They carefully review each request and respond within a few hours to ensure they meet the criteria.
  • A host is traveling and misses a booking request notification on their phone. The request expires after 24 hours, which counts as a decline and negatively impacts their acceptance rate for the quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Do Instant Bookings affect my acceptance rate?+
No, bookings made through an Instant Book feature are confirmed automatically and do not factor into your acceptance rate. This metric only applies to reservations initiated through a 'Request to Book' system where manual host approval is required.
What is considered a good acceptance rate for a vacation rental?+
While a high acceptance rate is generally beneficial for search visibility, specific requirements vary. For example, Airbnb no longer uses acceptance rate as a direct criterion for its Superhost program. However, other platforms have firm rules; Vrbo's Premier Host program, for instance, requires hosts to maintain a booking acceptance rate of 90% or higher.
How can I improve a low acceptance rate?+
To improve your acceptance rate, ensure your calendar availability and pricing are always accurate to prevent receiving requests you cannot honor. Respond to all booking requests promptly, well before the 24-hour expiration window. Only decline requests if a guest clearly indicates they will not follow your house rules or has very poor traveler reviews.
Does declining a pre-booking inquiry affect acceptance rate?+
No, an inquiry is a message from a guest asking questions before they send a formal booking request. Responding to or declining an inquiry does not affect your acceptance rate. However, your response rate and response time metrics are affected by how quickly you answer these initial messages.
