What is a Superhost?

Updated 2026-05-27

Superhost is a status awarded by the online travel agency Airbnb to its most experienced and highly-rated hosts. This designation recognizes individuals who consistently provide exceptional hospitality and meet a strict set of performance standards.

The program is designed to highlight reliable hosts, helping guests identify quality accommodations and building trust on the platform. To achieve and maintain this status, hosts are evaluated quarterly based on their overall rating, response rate, cancellation frequency, and the number of stays they have hosted.

The status is free and comes with benefits like increased visibility.

How it works

Airbnb automatically assesses every host's performance on a quarterly basis. The assessment dates are January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st.

To qualify, a host must meet four specific criteria over the preceding 12 months: maintain an overall rating of 4.8 or higher, have a response rate of 90% or more, keep their cancellation rate below 1%, and have hosted at least 10 stays (or 100 nights over at least 3 stays). Hosts who meet all criteria automatically receive or retain their Superhost status and badge for the next quarter.

Why it matters

For property managers and hosts, achieving Superhost status provides a significant competitive advantage on Airbnb. The badge acts as a trusted signal of quality, making listings more attractive to potential guests and often leading to higher booking rates.

Superhosts may also benefit from increased visibility in search results and access to exclusive rewards. This recognition can directly translate into increased occupancy and revenue for a host's properties.

Platforms like Lodgify can help hosts manage multiple listings and optimize their operations to meet the criteria for such programs and maximize their booking potential.

Examples

  • Maintaining an overall guest rating of 4.8 or higher over the past year.
  • Completing at least 10 stays or 100 nights across at least 3 stays in the past year.
  • Keeping the host-initiated cancellation rate below 1%.
  • Maintaining a 90% or higher response rate to guest inquiries within 24 hours.
  • The 'Superhost' badge displayed prominently on a host's Airbnb listing and profile page.

Frequently asked questions

How is Superhost different from Vrbo's Premier Host?+
Both are elite host programs recognizing quality, but their criteria differ. Airbnb's Superhost program assesses hosts quarterly based on a 4.8+ rating, <1% cancellation rate, 90%+ response rate, and hosting activity. Vrbo's Premier Host program also has quarterly assessments but requires a 4.3+ average rating, a 90%+ booking acceptance rate, and a <5% owner-initiated cancellation rate, along with a minimum number of bookings or nights.
Do I lose my Superhost status if I have one bad review?+
Not necessarily. Superhost status is based on your overall performance over the past 12 months, not a single review. While a bad review will lower your average rating, you will only lose the status if your overall average drops below the 4.8 threshold at the next quarterly assessment. Consistently high ratings from other guests can help offset the impact of one negative review.
Is there a fee to become a Superhost?+
No, there is no fee to become a Superhost on Airbnb. The status is earned purely based on meeting the performance metrics related to hospitality, responsiveness, reliability, and experience. It is a free recognition program designed to reward top-performing hosts. Hosts do not need to apply; eligibility is automatically reviewed by Airbnb every quarter.
How often is Superhost status evaluated?+
Superhost status is evaluated four times a year, every quarter. The assessment periods end on March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31. Airbnb then reviews every host's performance over the past 365 days. Hosts who meet the criteria on the assessment dates (January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1) earn or keep their status for the following three-month period.
